AUDITIONS: Seeking strong performers, youths and adults, for two productions in 2025!

We're looking for strong and diverse actors to audition for our 2024-25 productions. In-person and video auditions happen on December 9th, 11th and 12th, 6-9pm, at the Hayti Heritage Center.

SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT! Two free-to-the-public events make up our 2024-25 Season. In February, come see the first public performance of HELEN’S HISTORY HOP, a time-travelling romp through Black history, for kids of all ages. Then in May, grab your picnic basket and lawn chair for a classic afternoon (or evening) of Shakespeare in a park near you, with our production of OTHELLO.

Many thanks to our special sponsor @haytiheritagecenter for helping to make this season possible. Many thanks to the @durham_arts Durham Arts Council, for sponsoring us, the talented kids from @bumpthetriangle BUMP The Triangle for keeping the kid dialog real, and special guest actors and educators for their insight, to develop this play. Since last June, questions about STC have been circulating online and through the grapevine. Speculation and rumors have metastasized to the point where it has become necessary for STC to make a public statement.

Our new Board is dedicated to the growth and continued success of the company, and we have developed a plan for the future that will enable STC to continue the positive impact it strives to bring within the theater community. The first step in executing that plan is to own our past, learn from it, and move forward positively and respectfully.

Lots of flower power this weekend! We are proud to support the @lgbtcenterofraleigh LGBT Center of Raleigh and the @outraleighpridenc Out! Raleigh Pride event happening on Saturday 6/24 ,11a-6pm. Two stages of entertainment, vendors and food up and down Fayetteville St. It’s bound to be a good time.

The many loves of Aphra Behn - at least in this play. Charles II, after being restored to the English throne, reopened all the theaters and made it legal for women to act onstage – so of course they’ll need some good plays written for them. William Scot was Aphra’s partner in spying and is a little worse for wear after making his way to her apartment from Belgium. They’ll have a time prying her attentions from Nell, tho. Oh, and Ryan McDaniel plays both men, plus another besides.

"I'm just an orange girl made good."

Nell Gwynne (Kelly McDaniel, playing two other roles besides) was one of the first celebrity actresses - one of the first ACTRESSES, period - of the 17th century. Known for her quick wit, strong voice and good looks, "pretty, witty Nell" made a name for herself even before being trained in acting and dance, and had a meteoric rise through the ranks at Kings Theatre. Her acting style and legacy defined Restoration-era theater, and she appears as a main character in numerous plays and novels written since her death in 1687.

Three companies - that's 20+ actors and about as many production folks - are doing tech this weekend at @burningcoaltc , in preparation for Second Stage Season. Nell would probably love it.

Announcing auditions for the first play in our annual New Works Series: The Unsanctioned Minutes from Saint Lucy's Quaternitarian Church Council's Last Meeting. Seeking four female- and one male-presenting actors to bring this slice of southern church life to life.

“All women together, ought to let flowers fall upon the grave of Aphra Behn.” – Virginia Woolf

Aphra Behn (played by the excellent Laurel Ullman) wrote and lived passionately from 1640 through 1689. After serving King Charles II as a spy in Antwerp, she became one of the first English women to earn a living writing, with 22 plays and works of prose and poetry – many embracing the libertine anthems of free love, gender role flexibility, and humanitarian themes. Comparatively little is know about her personal life or early beginnings (one biographer referred to it as “a lethal combination of obscurity, secrecy and staginess”).

Her work was largely dismissed for many years after her death, but she inspired new female dramatists as the 17th century drew to a close. And 250 years later, she was rediscovered by feminist critics and writers, as formative to modern thinking about gender and sexuality.

Up next at STC: we are incredibly proud to be a part of @burningcoaltc 's Second Stage series, producing the NC premiere of OR, by Liz Duffy Anderson. This modern Restoration comedy tells the story of a night (or thereabouts) in the life of spy-turned-poet-turned-playwright Aphra Behn. Fans of historical fiction, politics and the 60's - that's 1660 or 1960's - are in for a quick-changing, door-slamming, thought-provoking night.

We'll also be checking out the other two shows in the series: The Face of Emmett Till from @purelifetheatre , and Ruby by @nycsuz . Lots of good theater coming up in June.
