PLAY SYNOPSIS:
A funny yet poignant family play, Pirates! follows eleven-year-old Jim, who is grappling with the recent divorce of his parents. His life is turned upside down when he’s kidnapped by the flamboyant pirate Captain Freely and taken on a high-seas adventure. As Captain Freely battles her rival, the English navy’s Captain McGovern, Jim finds himself caught between two worlds. His only way home—a magical treasure chest—is in the hands of the enemy. Ultimately, Jim must decide for himself what “home” truly is.
CASTING BREAKDOWN:
Captain McGovern/Dad: Male, any ethnicity, 25-35. As McGovern, he is an 18th-centurh British naval captain – strict, believes in law and order, and authoritative and precise leader, emphasizes loyalty. As Dad, he still has a belief in the rules and honoring your word, but he is also caring and guides with a gentler hand. Actor should be comfortable with comedy and a strong mover. Stage combat experience (sword fighting) is a plus but not required.
REHEARSAL INFORMATION:
Rehearsals will take place at the Durham Arts Council Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:15-9pm, and Saturdays 2-6pm, depending on actor availability.
